Regarding The Black Sun



The black sun is a symbol used in alchemy to represent the dark night of the soul or the stage of nigredo, which is the first step in the process of transmuting base metals into gold (sanchin) This stage is associated with darkness, decay, and death, as well as the breaking down of old patterns and the beginning of a new cycle of growth and transformation. 

In the second kata- Seisan kata, there is a move where the practitioner performs a backwards crane jump, and the hand rises up to protect the eyes. This move is thought to be a sign or clue to the suggestion that the black sun arises to its peak in Seisan. The backwards crane jump represents a leap into the unknown, a willingness to take risks and embrace change. The rising hand symbolizes the need to protect oneself from the intense light of the black sun, which can be blinding and disorienting. Another clue that Seisan kata references the alchemical process is the next third Phase- Sanseiryu, where the practitioner performs a move known as the "closing the lion mouth" This move involves the practitioner "devouring" the sun, which represents the stage of albedo, or purification. This stage is associated with light, clarity, and the shedding of impurities in order to reveal one's true nature.

Together, the backwards crane jump and the green lion moves in Seisan kata symbolize the transformational process of alchemy, from the darkness and chaos of nigredo to the clarity and purity of albedo. The black sun represents the breaking down of old patterns and the beginning of a new cycle of growth and transformation, while the green lion represents the purification and refinement of one's inner essence.
